What is a social enterprise?
A social enterprise is an organisation that uses business practices to achieve socially positive goals. It looks to raise money on its own - just like a traditional business. However, unlike a traditional business, which focuses on making profits for its shareholders, a social enterprise places improving society as its main goal.
Social enterprises don’t have to rely on other people for money (like a charity) and isn’t focused on making money for its owners (like a business). It can still make profit, but would responsibly reinvest it back into the company's social aims.
The Co-operative Group and The Big Issue are some of the largest social enterprises in the UK, but organisations come in all sizes. Erskine, based locally in Bishopton, is a social enterprise and helps veterans injured in past and current conflicts as well as providing commercial printing services. RAMH is another local example and the Kibble is one of the oldest social enterprises.
A social enterprise could be formed to setup youth activities or take over a local community hall - whatever you would like to achieve in your community.
